UTV clarifies Akshay's fee: Rs. 71 cr

UTV has issued a press statement, which is being reproduced verbatim:

"We would like to comment and place on record and clarify a totally false and speculative article that appeared in today's Times of India edition on the front page. Entitled 'Akshay paid Rs. 71 cr for a film?'

A) We do not comment on market speculation or motivated press comments to sensationalize things with untrue facts -- but still wish to clarify in the interest of our shareholders.

B) We did issue a full denial and directed them not to run the article.

C) We confirm that the speculation of the amount stated in the article is totally untrue and is not even close to even 50 per cent of the amount stated in the article.

D) We consider the article damaging to our company and our shareholders and damaging to the industry to project such unwarranted hype and consider this irresponsible journalism on a front page of a leading newspaper which people believe is credible when they read but is far from truth or facts.

We therefore consider it correct to issue this clarification."

There is No THE END for this jodi

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif are at it once again. The hit jodi, that was last seen in Singh Is Kinng last month, reunites for yet another comedy flick.

Only this time, it's directed by Priyadarshan.

A source in the industry reveals, "After the success of Singh Is Kinng, there was a strong buzz that it would be their last film together. The producer of the film, Vipul Shah announced, however, that the on-screen hit couple would be seen in his untitled film, which he intends to start after London Dreams. But it seems that Ratan Jain of Venus Records and Tapes have got Katrina to sign on the dotted line for his next multi-starrer titled De Dana Dan opposite Akki. The comedy film is directed by Priyadarshan and also stars Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy."

The source further adds, "This is going to be the Akki and Kat's fifth feature film together. In the past, all the movies they have been paired in have gone on to be blockbusters; except for their very first film together, Raj Kanwar's Humko Deewana Kar Gaye. However, De Dana Dan is going to mount the sets by November this year and will be shot in a single two-month long schedule in Singapore. Earlier, the southern actress Asin was meant to be opposite Akki. Due to date problems, however, she won't be doing the film."

Producer Ratan Jain remained unavailable for comment while Katrina Kaif refused to comment.

Akshay Kumar talks action!

Akki talks about Bangkok, his first love, his new show and about the many stunts he’s pulled off

Meeting Akshay Kumar in Bangkok is like meeting him on his home ground. He’s shooting for Rohan Sippy at his ‘second home.’ In between the shoot, he took a day off to promote Viacom 18’s new channel ‘Colors’ on which he is hosting ‘Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi. Akshay is very kicked about being on the small-screen. Here he talks about being on the chota pardah, his bonding with Bangkok and his first love action. Excerpts from our chat…

You must feel quite at home in Bangkok.
Well there are many more new bridges here now than there used to be, but you have to pay ‘toll’, so nobody uses them, so traffic is still the nightmare it was. The massages are just as superb as always.

Truly, this is the most humble city in the world. The second you leave here, it’s like being whacked over the back of your head with a stick, back to civilization, mad moods, dodgy attitudes… So yes I am very fond of my second home, just wish the rest of the world was like Bangkok, then maybe even Mr Bin Laden himself might sell coconuts on the streets…

It seems a full circle. You started off as an action hero and today you are back to doing action. Do you feel as agile even today?
Are you trying to tell me my circle is over? Darling, didn’t you know I was planning an action comeback when I’m 60 as well, walking stick and all. And what makes you think I’m at the pinnacle of my career! I’m only half way around this so-called circle…. And as for my agility, my son definitely takes care of that for me.

This is your second show for TV. What made you return to it?
Well, the money is always a good factor, but honestly this time I think it’s the fact that I get to perform deadly stunts in front of 13 beautiful ladies… I mean you’ve seen it normally, the hero always has to do insane stunts chasing some ugly villain, now I finally get to impress my ladies live. So really, I think an equal amount of both, and you end up with a very happy Akshay Kumar, lots of stunts, heroines and a little piece of crispy paper with lots of little zeroes on it.

Would you have done this show ten years back on TV?
No… More people have TV now than 10 years back… What’s the point in half-killing yourself if no one’s going see you do it…

You’ve done several deadly stunts. Did you direct any?
I’d probably be dead by now if I hadn’t directed some of them. But one thing an actor should always remember is never upset your stunt co-ordinator. You never know what cable might accidentally snap when you just happen to be jumping off a 100 ft building…

What has been the toughest stunt that you’ve performed so far in your career?
Without a shadow of a doubt, it was my stunt in ‘Khiladi’ where I stood on a flying aircraft and insanely jumped onto a hot air balloon…Not only am I lucky to be alive, I’m lucky I could still have children after that one…

Does your family, especially your son enjoy watching your stunts?
Well, my mom watches my stunts intently with her eyes shut, my sister always pretends she needs to go to the loo and nothing ever phases my wife. And as for my son, he thinks I’m the human version of Tom and Jerry even though anything happens to me, he knows his Dad will always be alright. He is a mini version of me, he loves action.

Lastly, given a choice, how would you be like to be remembered?
I would like to be remembered as ‘the man who did it all’.

Dr. Khiladi Kumar

Though superstar Akshay (Khiladi) Kumar's year's first release TASHAN couldn't show any 'Tashan' at Box office but he did walk away with all the praises for his fantastic performance as usual.

The 'Khiladi' already has his hands full with esteem projects like Vipul Shah's SINGH IS KINNG, Warner Bros.'s CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, Nagesh Kukunoor's EIGHT BY TEN and Sajid Nadiadwala's KAMBAKKTH ISHQ as of now. And very soon he will be seen anchoring an action reality show 'Fear Factor-Khatron Ke Khiladi' on a new channel - Colors, with as many as 13 gorgeous ladies from Bollywood.

And if this was not enough there's one more feather in the crown waiting for Akshay Kumar in the form of a Doctorate. Akki will be bestowed an honorary doctorate by the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It is heard that the University will honour Akshay on May 9. Akshay now has joined the league of honorary doctorate personalities like Yash Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Shilpa Shetty, who were conferred similar kind of honorary doctorates from foreign Universities in the past.

So, now Akshay Khiladi Kumar with a preceding 'Dr.' added to the name.

Snoop Dogg, Akshay Kumar to rap in SINGH IS KINNG

The Vipul Shah-produced SINGH IS KINNG is getting bigger by the day.

The latest on the film, according to industry sources, is that legendary rapper, Snoop Doggy Dogg will rap with superstar Akshay Kumar in the keenly anticipated film! The sources add that the celebrity rapper is likely to render a verse for the song and shoot a music video with Kumar very soon that will go on air well before the release of the film on August 8.

The film's main composer Pritam is not connected with the song, which is being handled independently by Akshay and Vipul. The Snoopy track is likely to form a part of the film's soundtrack, to be released by Junglee Music. Officials close to the film will not comment at this juncture but are likely to make a formal announcement soon.

SINGH IS KINNG is an Indian Film Company-Studio 18 release worldwide.

Go Snoop!

Step back, Vishal-Shekhar. Jamming with American rappers is the new ‘in thing’ for Bollywood’s wannabe rockstar actors.

Abhishek Bachchan kickstarted the trend with rapper Wyclef Jean on a track Hollywood meets Bollywood for an Aadesh Shrivastava video.

Now it’s Akshay Kumar’s turn to rap with an international artist. The buzz is that Akki will be crooning with a rapper for his upcoming movie Singhh is King.

And, industry sources reveal that this rapper is none other than Snoop Dogg of Dead Man Walkin and Ego Trippin fame. Filmmaker Vipul Shah, however, is singing a different tune. “I have not signed up Snoop Dogg for Singhh is King,” he declared somewhat testily, “I don’t know from where these rumours generate.” But, yes, Vipul did concede that there will be a track in his film where Akki will rap with an international artist. “Nothing has been finalised yet. We are still working out the details,” he added.

Akki's gesture wins the match!

Akshay's gesture in the teaser of SINGH IS KINNG where he has his hands straightened out and roars 'Kidda' (in Punjabi) is gradually acquiring cult status.

Recently at a cricket match in Delhi, when Akshay and Katrina were hanging out, Priyanka Gandhi's husband, Robert Vadhera, apparently a huge Akshay fan, reportedly expressed being impressed by the teaser of SINGH IS KINNG and added that he found Akshay's hand gesture "very cool".

Akki promptly got up and repeated the gesture till his team had won!

That's Akshay Kumar for you - taking his victory all the way through!

An Indian Films-Studio 18 release SINGH IS KINNG will hit cinema hall worldwide on August 08.

Akki beats SRK hands down

Vipul Shah's Singh Is Kinng has highest ever music sale in more than a decade. Sources close to the production house reveal that the sales for a limited period of time have been for whopping Rs 13.5 crore. Says Sandeep Bharghava of Indian Films, "This is a landmark valuation and we are very proud to be associated with the biggest films of 2008 – Singh is Kinng and Ghajini. We are very sure the music will do very well".

Indian Films, who own the worldwide rights of Singh is Kinng, have sold the music rights to Times Music. Says Adarsh Gupta of Times Music, "Having tasted humongous success with one of the biggest grosser of 2007 in the Hindi film category, Welcome, we are now signing on what is believed to be the biggest hit of 2008 with Singh is Kinng."

Music industry has been going through a lot of turbulent times and had hit the slumber in revenues. Average music sales were less than Rs 3 cr and even a talked about project like Shahrukh Khan's Om Shanti Om had gone for Rs 7 cr.

If the music sale of Singh is Kinng is any indication then the music valuations are back and how.

Says Vipul Shah, the producer of Singh is Kinng, "Akshay Kumar has been commanding a huge draw, whether it would be the box office, satellite or music are concerned. I am not surprised at all."

King Kumar?

Promos of Singh is Kinng changed ‘Badshah’ to ‘King’ to avoid reference to SRK; guess they forgot about King Khan!

The promos of Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Kinng are out. The teaser declares, “The King of Bollywood as never seen before” just before Akshay makes his entry.

A source close to the film reveals that the makers were initially planning to use the line “The Badshah of Bollywood” in the teaser. However, they changed the plan since the Badshah title is usually associated with Shah Rukh.

A promo using ‘Badshah of Bollywood’ was shot for publicity puposes but not used because Akshay didn’t want the Badshah reference as it would create unnecessary controversy. A source says, “Singh is Kinng is a blockbuster for Akshay.

The promo obviously wanted to cash in on the recent success his films have had at the box office. This is the first time there’s a promo that directly announces Akshay as the ‘King’ of Bollywood.”

However, if they dropped Badshah because it is associated with SRK, then King defeats the purpose, as SRK is also known as King Khan.

The makers have made several promos featuring Akshay and these will be released over a period of time. “They wanted to start with a bang announcing Akshay as the true King of Bollywood. In a way, using the title of King also puts him directly in contention with Shah Rukh.”

Wasn’t the intention to avoid controversy?

Katrina set to win the 2008 RACE!!

Katrina Kaif is all set to end 2008 on a winning note.

Though only first quarter of 2008 has gone by and Katrina has seen only release [RACE], the going only looks better for her with two more films of her, which are confirmed for 2008 release, appearing to be sure shot hits. While first to come would be SINGH IS KING, YUVRAAJ would be the grand finale, which Katrina would be a part of in the coming months.

Anees Bazmee-Akshay Kumar factor is certainly going to work in a big way for SINGH IS KING which is expected to take a roaring initial on it's arrival in the month of August. Moreover YUVRAAJ, which has bigwigs like Subhash Ghai, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan and A.R. Rahman involved, has all going in it's favor, what with Ghai promising to return to his larger than life spectacular dramas.

With Katrina already registering 5 successful films in a row (NAMASTEY LONDON, PARTNER, APNE, WELCOME, RACE), it is going to be number 6 and 7 for her soon!

Akshay dances to Mika's tune

Talking about item numbers, actor Akshay Kumar along with producer Vipul Shah were on the lookout for that one song for the film Singh Is Kinng that would make a difference. When singer Mika learnt of this he immediately smsed Akshay.

His message read: Do you want a hit? Mika was called the very next day and briefed about a new track. We hear that he has rendered such a great song, that the demanding perfectionists, Vipul and Akshay are 'hit' with the outcome.

Akshay on a roll!Akshay on a roll!

The year 2007 clearly belonged to Akshay Kumar and 2008 promises to be no different.

But while last year witnessed Akki at his funniest best in comical avatars, this year will see the superstar reclaim his Action King status. It’s a homecoming of sorts for the Khiladi who’s back to his forte of beating up baddies and performing his signature death-defying stunts after a hiatus of almost four years.

And the actor’s fans have more reasons to rejoice as Akki has not one, but almost four action films under his belt, including Kambaqth Ishq, Rohan Sippy’s Chandni Chowk to China, Vipul Shah’s Singh is Kingg and Yash Chopra’s Tashan.

Talking about the break from his action image, Akshay says, "I just wanted to explore all aspects of the spectrum, right from comedy to emotions and not be slotted in a particular image. What I want to do is entertain. But action is always closer to heart. After all, action does speak louder than words, doesn’t it?"
So, did he miss doing action in all the years? "No, my son made sure I get enough of it," laughs Akki referring to son Aarav who keeps his ‘daadaa’ on toes. On a serious note he adds, "I keep myself fit as action needs a very high standard of concentration and strength, so I have not really been away from it. But, of course, sometimes you miss being the tough guy who can dishum dishum the world."

And though the actor confesses that being a family man does make him think twice before performing any stunt, he’s not wary of going in for any daredevilry. "It’s action that has made me what I am today and the show must go on. We are entertainers after all, right?" he quips. Was it difficult getting back to action? "Nah, not really! Don’t forget my middle name, before King was Khiladi. Action is in my blood," says the actor. "Action may have evolved manifold, but at the core it still remains the same!"

Talking about the sea change he’s witnessed in the past few years, Akki says, "The boys are men now and this is where the tough get going. So you need to be really fit to pull of daredevil stunts. We are being watched and compared to the best, so we better be up to it." And what does he find more difficult making people laugh or doing scary stunts? "A stunt is when you compete with yourself. You are in control, but in comedy, your performance depends on your audience, so I would say comedy is more difficult." Are there any actors he looks up to? "Tom and Jerry! They’re good at both action and comedy. I don’t think anyone can beat them," pat comes the reply.

Akshay's look for Singh Is Kinng revealed

Akshay Kumar is soon getting the reputation of being the good side of Gulshan Grover, for he is one actor who is experimenting with his looks a lot these days. One can find him in a new avatar that of a ‘pagadi’ donning a Sardar in his forthcoming Vipul Shah’s film, Singh is Kinng. IndiaFM brings you a sneak peek into Akshay’s much talked about look in the film.

While on this film, there are also rumors that this film is basically produced and financed by none other than Akshay Kumar himself! At first, we ourselves were taken aback with this stunner of a news. Hence, we decided to get it straight from the horse’s mouth. When we spoke to Vipul Shah to confirm the same, he denied the rumors very strongly and said, “I am not going to talk about this at all, as this is completely ridiculous. To get the clarification on this, you need to talk to Akshay himself and find out. And as far as I am concerned, I do not want to talk about the money at all.”
