SRK, Kareena win Apsara awards

Film and Television Producers' Guild of India (FTPGI) honoured veteran Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra with its top award for "outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema".

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan received the best actor award for his performance in the Yash Raj Films' superhit film Chak De! India. Kareena Kapoor walked away with the best actress trophy for her comic portrayal of a young Sikh girl in Jab We Met at a glittering presentation ceremony at the MMRDA Grounds in the Bandra-Kurla Complex in northwest Mumbai on Sunday.

FTPGI hosts its own award ceremony to honour Indian artistes as well as creative and technical personalities from the film industry every year. The trophies are known as 'Apsara' awards.

While Chak De! India was chosen the best movie of 2007, its director Shimit Amin bagged the trophy for the best director.

A Pakistani television channel, ARY Gold, also honoured actor Hrithik Roshan as the Best Male Style Icon of the year at the ceremony. The star, however, could not make it to the ceremony. His father, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, received the trophy on his behalf.

Katrina Kaif bagged the Best Female Style Icon ARY Gold trophy.

Akshay Kumar, who churned out the maximum number of hits last year, was adjudged the Entertainer of the Year by the FTPGI jury.

NDTV Imagine honoured Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor as the year's best new faces - female and male - respectively.

Salman Khan and Govinda received the hit pair NDTV Imagine trophy for their breezy performances in producer Sohail Khan's hit movie last year, Partner. Salman Khan, Bipasha Basu, Kareena and Ritesh Deshmukh performed on stage and livened up the well-attended awards presentation ceremony put together by Wizcraft.

Box office 2007: Comedies steal the show

Khallas ! It's closing time and the booking window at Bollywood is still grinning, despite the series of flops in the last two weeks.

If Yash Chopra's much-awaited Madhuri magic failed to work its jaadu with Aaja Nachle clicking a mere Rs 11 crore in its first week, then Sudhir Mishra's film noir, Khoya Khoya Chand managed a mere 15% opening this Friday, along with an equally dismal show for Sanjay Gupta's star-heavy Dus Kahaniyan , which opened to just 30% occupancy. Last week, John Abraham's histrinoics in the football field too offered no cause for celebration. Dhan Dhan Dhana Goal has garnered a two-weeks gross of only Rs 15 crore.

So why's Bollywood grinning? Year 2006 has gone down in Bollywood history as the turnaround year, when the top 25 films grossed a total of Rs 620 crore, which was a 26% increase over the grosses of 2005. This was the year that witnessed a renewed Dhoom ( Dhoom 2 ) in film-making and set the tone for a braver, bouncier 2007.

Officially, 2007 too has just ten certified hits, which almost measures up to last year's list that boasts of biggies like Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Omkara ... But it's the money that makes the real difference. Year 2007 boasts of one the biggest hits of the decade.

Om Shanti Om has already outgrossed the 21st century's biggest hit, Gadar (with a net adjusted gross of Rs 94 crore) with a staggering BO bounty of Rs 76 crore and is still going strong. Blame it on Shah Rukh Khan's charisma or Deepika Padukone's dusky sensuality, but the film has managed to make its millions despite being nothing more than a comedy circus that has no after-hours impact, whatsoever.

Seeing the staggering response, the industry has anointed Farah Khan as 'The Entertainer', replacing Karan Johar and his brand of Mumbai-meets-Manhattan masala .

But that's just the tip of the cherry shake. Yesterday's Badshah of Blah, David Dhawan too made a comeback in a blockbuster way with his desi Hitch, Partner , grossing Rs 62 crore. Again, the film hardly matched the rib tickling humour of Dhawan's earlier teasers like Coolie No. 1 and Hero No. 1 , but the Salman and Govinda chemistry clicked in a big way. The year definitely belonged to comedies and comedies alone, with Partner leading the laugh riot which includes Dhamaal, Heyy Babyy, Dhol and Bhool Bhulaiyya . Add OSO to this, and you’ll find the top 10 list already has six comedies in it.

At the number two position, there is more serious stuff: Chak De India with Rs 65 crore in its coffers. Surely, this can easily be crowned the film of the year with its gentle, subtle and straight-from-the-heart message of desh-prem which must necessarily sift out regional chauvinism and minority bashing from its ambit. More importantly, Chak De India can easily go down in SRK’s filmography as his best performance, till date.

The rest of the winners include Mani Ratnam's Guru, Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met and Vipul Shah's Namastey London . All these films have grossed more than Rs 30 crore. And if the top 10 haven't created a storm at the box office, there are a number of semi-hits which have kept the industry afloat. Films like Apne, Aap Ka suroor, Shootout at Lokhandwala , Bheja Fry, Khosla ka Ghosla, Metro, Black Friday, Parzania , The Namesake and Honeymoon Travels have shown that the industry is eager to tread the untrodden path and definitely wants to break new ground.

Surely, it will take more than a Salaam-e-Ishq, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom , or a Ram Gopal Ki Aag to script its doom story. Perhaps nobody reflects the current mood better than the house of Yash Chopra Inc, which shows a dismal record of four flops ( Tara Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laga Chunari Mein Daag, Aaj Nachle ) on one side of the coin and Chak De India glittering on the other side of it. Hits or flops, the show just keeps going on and on.

JAB WE MET back in circulation in a big way

After a week of being a standby because of the big war between OM SHANTI OM and SAAWARIYA, JAB WE MET has been back in circulation. And how! If the fourth week collections of the film (the week in which OM SHANTI OM and SAAWARIYA reached their second week and shows were increased for JAB WE MET), are any indication, the film is all set to enjoy an extended box office run across the country.

Though in normal circumstances, films take a 50% fall with every passing week, JAB WE MET has achieved just the reverse and has shown a 50% jump in collections across the reported centers. This means that the film's collections are in 26-27 crore range and would comfortably touch the 30 crores mark.

With collections like this, JAB WE MET would be Shahid Kapoor's second movie to get into 30 crore bracket after VIVAH. A good feat indeed!

Exhibitors opt for JWM, dropping SAAWARIYA

Strange as it may sound, but from today (Friday), many of the exhibitors are going to opt for the three week old Shahid-Kareena starrer, JAB WE MET, removing SAAWARIYA. The trend is very pronounced in small centers and single screens. Even many of the leading multiplexes / cineplexes have reduced the number of shows of the one week old SAAWARIYA and have reverted to JAB WE MET, which did exceedingly well during its two week run.

When we talked to the concerned people, the view is unanimous- After Monday, the collections of SAAWARIYA are going down alarmingly with each passing day, and there is little or no hope of a pick-up. As per inputs available with us and going by the paying audiences reaction, it was inevitable, and we are not surprised.

While on JAB WE MET, the movie was rock steady, even in the second week (check out our latest box-office report), and had to be prematurely removed, to make way for the heavyweight 'Diwali' biggies like OM SHANTI OM and SAAWARIYA.

Kareena will work with Shahid again

Actors Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur may have broken up, but they have managed to create a magic of sorts in their recently released film.

But the question is: Will Bebo share screen-space with Shahid again? “But of course," she says unabashedly. “It’s weird that people even think of asking me this question,” she says. “

Shahid and I have worked together in several films, and we’ve shared some wonderful onscreen chemistry in Jab We Met.

So if a good script comes our way, we’ll do it!” Now that’s as professional an actor can get. But Bebo, too, believes that ‘the show must go on’!

TNN

JAB WE MET is not Shahid-Kareena's last!

Some sources have been quick to write their obituary about the Shahid-Kareena pair (due to obvious reasons!), despite their professional approach in completing their latest, JAB WE MET. Rumours are rife that JAB WE MET will be their last film together. But that is far from the truth.

The factual position is that even if Shahid and Kareena decide never to work together again, MILENGE MILENGE is likely to be their last film and not JAB WE MET.

While on MILENGE MILENGE, the film produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Satish Kaushik, is carrying good reports. Anil Agarwal, the Delhi-U.P and East Punjab distributor of MILENGE MILENGE, saw the film recently and was floored!

Jab We Met : Remake of Hollywood flick ?

Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met is creating a lot of buzz mainly because the main actors of the film - Shahid and Kareena Kapoor have broken up. However, that aside, it's being speculated that the film is inspired by a Hollywood hit film A Walk In The Clouds . Earlier the same film proved to be an inspiration for filmmakers like David Dhawan and Raj Kanwar.

In the original motion picture, Paul and a young girl meet on a bus. The girl is heading homewards to help with the grape harvest and to face his dominative dad. The girl is pregnant and she thinks if her dad knows of her pregnancy he will kill her. Paul poses to be her husband. Love blooms and that's that.

David Dhawan's Kunwara had a similar storyline with a different twist to it, while Raj Kanwar's Dhai Akshar Prem Ke had lots of similarities, too. Jab We Met , however, is a little different from the original. In the film Shahid and Kareena meet on a train, and no Kareena, in the film, is not pregnant.

When we asked filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, if his film was indeed a remake, he denied so, saying, " Jab We Met is not inspired or copied from any Hollywood film. Though it has boy meet girl on a journey theme it is totally different from other films that are made on similar themes. Mahesh Bhatt's Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi had a similar theme but it doesn't mean that my film is copy of his film. There are so many movies on the same theme. My film is original and not a copy or remake of any Hollywood film."

He further continues "The idea of JWM came to me from my train journeys. I developed this idea into a romantic film. I haven't seen A Walk In The Clouds , so cant comment on it."

Shahid Kapoor travels by Mumbai's Local Train

Rail Gaadi, Rail Gaadi, chuk chuk chuk chuk….’ It is now Shahid’s turn to sing this song. Traveling in ‘aamchi local gaadi’ on Monday night, Shahid chatted up with fellow passengers whilst endorsing his upcoming flick, Jab We Met.

In the film, the characters, ‘Aditya’ (Shahid) and ‘Geet’ (Kareena) set out on a journey, after they miss their train. No, wonder then that the promotions of the film are done using the local train. The producers of Jab We Met had painted two full local trains in Mumbai from the Western and Central lines with Jab We Met imagery.

Reliving every moment on the sets of the film, Shahid sure had a ball to be closer to his fans. We are sure Shahid had a journey of a lifetime. The reel journey however, releases on October 26 worldwide.

Saif and Kareena : All for films

It’s really funny how a star’s love life becomes such a big deal. And since it is a ‘big-deal’ we are but forced to write about it, because this is what our dear darlings love to read about. So, the latest round-up on this handsome couple has a new twist. People are now speculating about a ‘tie-up’ of sorts between the Chopra clan and the producers of Jab We Met.

It’s just a promotional tactic for both films. A Kareena-Shahid break-up will help Jab We Met, and a Kareena-Saif off-screen pairing will help Chopra’s next film, Tashan. So the two have come together with this brilliant win-win situation, say some insiders of the film industry. What we say is, let ‘em be!

TNN

it hurts to see and read this all the time : Shahid

The endearing Shahid Kapoor has decided to end his silence and talk about his break-up with the ravishing Kareena Kapoor.

Disturbed by the onslaught of pictures in the media of her and the new man in her life, actor Saif Ali Khan, Shahid admitted to BT: "It will be dishonest to say that this doesn’t affect me. I am human, it hurts to see and read this all the time. I guess I have no choice but to live and deal with it."

Their movie together is ready for release this week and he says that he is hoping the audience accepts them as an onscreen couple. Just as he talks his film, he goes on to talk about his relationship with Kareena that failed.

"I hold nothing against anybody, if I do, it will pull me down, and I’m not like that. I’ll cherish the good memories of that relationship and move on. That’s what I’m doing — looking at the positive side and trying to be happy," he said sadly.

And is one of the positive sides the fact that the lover boy is single all over again? Shahid smiled coyly, "I am feeling a certain sense of independence all over again. Today, I have time to myself and can do things which maybe I always wanted to do but never could. From where I am at this point in life, things are looking up. The best part is the overwhelming affection, concern and support that people are showing. I feel special."

What went wrong between Kareena and him? Was he a possessive lover? “Love in itself is enough. It brings security. One doesn’t need to be possessive. I have never been like that,” he said, adding, “But it is below Bebo’s dignity and mine to talk about all this now. I wish her all the happiness in the world. I have great respect for her. She’s a wonderful girl.” And what about himself? “Oh, I’m very optimistic and still believe in love. You don’t plan to fall in love but, yes, I will fall in love again,” he said crinkling his eyes and beaming.
