Urmila takes the plunge on birthday!
"Being an Aquarian I couldn't think of a better birthday than this," Urmila told IANS over phone from the exotic location. "I've been virtually living underwater for the past few days. That's where I'm on my birthday. Believe me, it's like being in paradise," said Urmila.
"Even my instructor is zapped by my enthusiasm, specially since I can't swim. I have snorkeled in Goa, but the water in India isn't that clean. And I was rather apprehensive to go underwater... but what better time than your birthday to let the mind conquer physical fears?"
For years Urmila has been planning to learn swimming.
"Would you believe I'm an Aquarian and I've done all these supposedly sizzling water-borne scenes. But I didn't know how to swim! I still don't. I can't swim to save my life. Once during a shooting in mid-ocean, the boat collapsed and I nearly drowned. That's when I decided I have to swim."
"Though I haven't taken proper swimming lessons and you won't catch me in a swimming pool, I decided to take the plunge anyway. You know me. Once I decide to do something, I'll do it. For now, the only man in my life is my scuba diving instructor."
The actress, who was last seen in "Karzzzz", says usually she goes underground on her birthday.
"Each year I go underground for my birthday. This year I went underwater. Seriously, I'm not a birthday person. For years and years my father has made charitable donations on my birthday. To me that means more than any celebration."
"Friends wonder why I'm so thanda (unenthusiastic) about my birthday. But I'm excited about my birthday. I just can't go around skipping and dancing about it. Though my screen persona is of an aggressive person, I'm basically shy. I find it hard to show my excitement."
The actress was seen in hits like "Rangeela", "Kaun", "Jungle" and "Bhoot".

Urmila sizzles with Himesh
The item song that will soon be filmed on Urmila and Himesh has been sung by Himesh and Sunidhi Chauhan. Himesh says, “It’s a situation which Satishji created and the song is called Tandoori Nights.”
This song was not part of the original Karz. Urmila is playing the character essayed by Simi Garewal in the original she didn’t have a song.
Urmila plays a young as well as an older character in the film and the curiosity factor about her look on the film is big.
Says Himesh, “Urmila’s glam look has been styled by Manish Malhotra, and producer Bhushan Kumar had a certain concept in mind and he told Manish what he wanted. It’s a blend of elegance and oomph, pastels with shimmer and satin.” Himesh’s look has been designed by his sister Rupa.
This is the first time that Himesh will be seen with Urmila on screen and Himesh is full of praise for his co-star, “She’s a super professional artiste who is always on time and even after working for so many years in the industry she works for a scene like a newcomer; which is commendable.”

Urmila goes mainstream after 5 years
October 19, 2007; This is the date when Urmila Matondkar would be returning to mainstream cinema with the release of Vikram Bhatt directed Speed. A film that finds it's inspiration from Hollywood hit Cellular; it has Zayed Khan, Aftab Shivdasani and Tanushree Datta as added star attraction.
But what was she doing all these five years? Doing a mix of unconventional and offbeat cinema which doesn't quite fall into an end to end commercial mainstream bracket. Pinjar (2003), Tehzeeb (2003), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara (2005) and Banaras - A Mystic Love Story (2006) are just some of the examples.
What would have made her choose to change tracks? Ponders Onir, director of Bas Ek Pal (2006) which starred her in a pivotal role, "There is a phase in every actor's career when you wish you were doing something different from the ordinary. I guess Urmila too wanted to switch tracks after playing a conventional leading lady for around a decade."
The move apparently turned out to be counter-productive for her. She got critical acclaim for majority of her films but Box Office success evaded her. There were a couple of exceptions though with Ram Gopal Varma's last horror success Bhoot (2003) being decent while Naina (2005) managing to cover costs at some centers. In both the films, she had to enact the role of a woman who was troubled and petrified due to paranormal events in her life.
"Don't blame an actor if a movie doesn't perform well", defends her Ek Haseena Thi (2004) director Sriram Raghavan. "If Ek Haseena Thi didn't quite make waves at the box office, it could be due to wrong promotional strategy, market placement or dozen other factors. Did anyone say that Urmila was bad in the film?"
She may not have been bad but with nothing much happening in Bollywood, her 'Mehbooba' act in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007) was termed by a few as a desperate attempt. Couldn't there have been a better way to return to limelight?
Argues Sriram, "Firstly I haven't seen Aag. Secondly, I am sure that if the film would have worked, we all would have credited Urmila's dance number as one of the major reasons for the film's success." Concludes Onir, "Don't forget that during last 5 years, she has attempted to carry a movie on her own shoulders."
Apart from Speed, Urmila would also be seen in a brief appearance as herself in Om Shanti Om. Come 2008 and she would be re-enacting the role made memorable by Simi Garewal in Himesh's remake of Karz.

Aby's new 'Mehbooba' Urmila
Abhishek will dance and lip-sync Ganesh Hedge's version of R.D. Burman's 'Mehbooba o mehbooba' while Urmila Matondkar will groove to the funky tune. Amitabh Bachchan, playing Gabbar, will watch the flamboyant razzmatazz.
In the original 'Sholay' Helen danced, Jalal Agha crooned and Amjad Khan looked on. Abhishek will therefore play Jalal Agha's part.
'Abhishek is delighted to step into the cameo. If you remember he was originally cast as Veeru. But he had to beg off due to date problems. When Abhishek heard Ganesh Hegde's track he immediately offered to perform in the song with Urmila. He's really excited about it. He himself volunteered to do it,' Varma told IANS.
Urmila, who played Abhishek's sister-in-law in Anupam Kher's 'Om Jai Jagdish', is very excited about having both the Bachchans together for her dance.
'The primary difference between the other Amitabh-Abhishek songs like 'Kajra re' ('Bunty Aur Babli') and 'Rock 'n' roll soniye' ('Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna') is that the father and son have been highly interactive in these songs. In my film they might not even look at one another.'
The film has Ajay Devgan as Veeru, Mohit Ahlawat as Jai, while Mohanlal will be seen in the role of Thakur.
For the female leads, Varma has roped in Sushmita Sen to play the widow and Nisha Kothari as Basanti.
